Two great novelists to publish with Ings Press

September 19, 2026

Ings Press is dedicated to bringing the best in new writing to the reading public. To date, this has mainly involved poetry, with volumes from Colin Speakman, Carole Bromley and Emma Storr. However, we made a wonderful start to our publication of fiction, with Ryall Hill’s debut short story collection, Bradford District Lines.

Now, we are about to extend our selection of fiction with work from not one, but two established writers, Michael Stewart and Bill Broady.

Michael Stewart, renowned author of novels such as King Crow, Ill Will and, most recently, Black Wood Women, is also the the creator of the Brontë Stones project: four monumental stones situated in the landscape between the Brontë birthplace and the parsonage, inscribed with poems by Kate Bush, Carol Ann Duffy, Jeannette Winterson and Jackie Kay. In addition, he is director of the Brontë Writing Centre in Haworth.

Ings Press is delighted that Michael has agreed to bring out a Christmas ghost story, The Ballad of Nancy Fullgood, in a pocket-sized edition – an ideal stocking filler! In the story, a woman goes for a walk on a cold winter’s night. When rain soaks her to the skin, she thinks she has found shelter. However, as she learns the tragic story of Nancy Fullgood, her discomfort grows with that of the reader.

Watch out for details of the launch and the possibility of a new venture from Michael, on which Ings Press hopes to collaborate! In the meantime, the story is available to pre-order.

The second author is Bill Broady, the Bradford-based writer, whose debut novel, Swimmer, was published to great acclaim around the turn of the millennium. Recent novels with Salt Publishing include The Night-Soil Men and this year’s There’s No ‘F’ in Wonderful, a novel set in the world of Northern Soul and Yorkshire casinos in the 1970s.

Hard on the heels of the latter, Ings presents the novella, Women Will Save Us. Blending bildungsroman with shaggy dog story, the novella moves through sixties and seventies counter culture as it runs headlong into the gender politics prevailing at the turn of the eighties. Frank and funny in the way it dwells in the realms of high and low art, Broady ponders in his inimitable prose on male privilege and why it took so long to be challenged!

Once again, watch out for launch details – and the book can again be pre-ordered.
